National Public Health Week

One of the largest opportunities to recognize public health efforts throughout the year, National Public Health Week (NPHW) was one of the first campaigns I had the opportunity to work on at YSPH.

When I first arrived, I learned that NPHW had been approached with little structure, strategy, or formal communications planning in previous years. I saw this as a major opportunity to expand my public health communications experience and lead a more intentional, impactful campaign.

For our NPHW campaign, we established a few key goals:

  1. Engage the YSPH community, primarily students and alumni.

  2. Create compelling content that educates the general public about public health.

  3. Create proactive promotion of the week's events from YSPH and NPHW across YSPH channels.

One of my first tasks was to establish a communications plan. With the help of one of our student workers, we gathered information about all of the NPHW events that would be occurring so that we could appropriately create promotional materials for the celebration. Additionally, we put together a preliminary plan of the pre-promotion, week-of promotion, and post-promotion for the week. You can see the full plan here.

For NPHW, I contributed to several key components of the campaign. I updated our interdisciplinary public health chart—which became a major hit on social media, especially on LinkedIn—by incorporating comments and recommendations gathered from the previous year’s post.

I also developed a suite of evergreen templates that can be reused annually, including:

These assets provided consistency, strengthened our visual identity for NPHW, and streamlined future planning efforts.

I was also responsible for taking student-developed and proofread content, formatting it in Yale Message, and sending it out each day according to that day’s theme.

Lessons Learned

For future campaigns, I would make the emails more concise and visually engaging, and increase photography coverage of in-person events to better capture and share the experience.
